Panruti: The Jackfruit Paradise
The smell of jackfruit wafts in the air as one drives through Panruti in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, India. Panruti is home to the largest area under jackfruit cultivation in the State. It is also likely the only place in India where jackfruit is grown as a monocrop on over 800 hectares.
Geographical Indication (GI) tags are given for products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities that are unique to their place of origin. Panruti has been waiting for a GI tag for the delicious jackfruit, which would add value and build a global reputation for the product. Jackfruit export and processing is a major economic opportunity in this region. Many farmers, especially women, and small businesses depend on this fruit for their livelihood.
